Twenty years ago, Peter Drucker wrote in Innovation and Entrepeneurship that innovation can be purposeful and methodical:
Systematic innovation therefore consists in the purposeful and organized search for changes, and in the systematic analysis of the opportunities such changes might offer for economic or social innovation.Innovation is not just about creativity, but about analyzing opportunities. Product managers are the people whose responsibility it is to research the market for these opportunities. They therefore lay the groundwork for innovation.
